Out & About

Nestled in the lovely village of Littleton in Hampshire, the Running Horse is the perfect place to stay to discover everything that the nearby cathedral city of Winchester and its surrounding areas have to offer. Use us as a base for your visit to Winchester or for a day out in the surrounding areas.

Winchester, Hampshire’s ancient capital of England, is just a 12-minute drive from us and has numerous fascinating historic landmarks to visit. Medieval Winchester Castle, which features King Arthur’s legendary Round Table, is a must-see, as is Wolvesey Castle and Palace, one of the greatest medieval buildings in England.

Winchester Cathedral is one of the largest cathedrals in Europe and the city’s most notable historic attraction. Not only is it home to stunning medieval and contemporary art, but also it is the burial place of English novelist Jane Austen, and houses an interesting exhibition about her life.

If you’re not a history buff, then don’t worry, as there are plenty of other attractions nearby for all the family. Marwell Zoo, which is a 22-minute drive from us, is home to hundreds of animals including iconic species that are being conserved. Enjoy stunning views of the animals, daily talks and activities, five adventure playgrounds and much more.

We are also just 25 minutes from the New Forest National Park, a stunning area which includes one of the largest remaining tracts of unenclosed pasture land, heathland and forest in the heavily populated south east of England.

Don't just take our word for it

Lovely pub with separate rooms and delicious food. I came up to Winchester with my Mum and daughters to have some retail therapy at the Christmas market. The rooms were lovely, we had one each, my girls in one and me and Mum next door. Beautiful clean rooms, amazing shower complete with slippers and robes.
My youngest has severe food allergies and the manager Anita and Chef Stuart were extremely helpful in catering for her, from initial emails to meeting and chatting with him there, resulting in delicious steak and mashed potato, followed by home-made ice cream.
All the staff were very friendly and helpful, but our especial thanks to Anita and Stuart xx. We will be back!

We stayed for 4 nights and everything was perfect, the staff were very accommodating, the rooms were beautiful and everything was just lovely. Can't express how much I liked this place. I live in London but I'm thinking of going back again. Lovely pub, excellent stay!

Lovely place to stay and eat. Very relaxed and the sun was shining in the garden when I arrived - loved the window seat in the inn more though! Great ambience, truly wonderful food and the room was decorated with soft warming and country rustic colours and very comfy.

We visited for a long weekend over the Easter holiday. We chose the Running Horse as it was convenient for the places we were visiting. Can't speak highly enough of this pub/hotel. Rooms are spacious and comfortable - lovely comfy bed - very clean. Staff are excellent and the food was extremely good. Breakfast was tasty and a great start to the day. We ate twice for evening meals. The Fish and Chips very nice but my American wife says the burger is the best she's had in the UK. So nice we decided to stay an extra night.
